SpoolSpider Brand PLA is EN71-3 certified in accordance with CMYK standards, confirming that it meets the safety requirements for use in the manufacturing of toys.
EN71-3 is the European standard covering the migration of certain elements from toy materials and parts. Certification under this standard demonstrates that SpoolSpider Brand PLA has been tested and verified as suitable for toy applications, giving makers and manufacturers confidence when producing toys and child-friendly items.
This certification currently applies to our single colour PLA range.
If you are producing toys or items intended for use by children, please ensure you select from our single colour PLA options covered by this certification. For any products outside this scope, please contact us before use in toy manufacturing.
EN71-3 certification is a prerequisite for UKCA and CE certification for toys.
UKCA (UK Conformity Assessed) marking is mandatory for toys placed on the market in Great Britain (England, Wales, and Scotland), while CE marking is required for toys sold in the European Union and European Economic Area. Both schemes require compliance with the EN71 series of standards, of which EN71-3 is a core component covering chemical safety.
Important: EN71-3 certification applies to the filament itself. It does not mean that a finished toy made from this filament is automatically UKCA or CE certified. UKCA/CE certification for a finished toy must be carried out separately by the manufacturer of the toy, and covers the finished product as a whole — not just the material it is made from.
In practice, this means that EN71-3 test evidence is a required part of the technical documentation needed to demonstrate conformity when applying for UKCA or CE marking for toys. Without chemical migration evidence such as EN71-3, a technical file is often considered incomplete for toy compliance purposes.
For official guidance on placing UKCA or CE marked products on the market in Great Britain, see the UK Government's guidance: Placing UKCA or CE marked products on the market in Great Britain.
